A curious eastern chipmunk pauses mid-climb on a lichen-covered sapling, caught in a moment of mutual surprise deep in the rural woods of western New York. Off the beaten path, this little guy seemed just as puzzled by the towering two-legged visitor as I was delighted to find him. A few thorn scratches later — completely worth it for this face-to-face encounter.
